Derived from her performance Nefertiti/Devonia Evangeline (1980), Lorraine O’Grady’s photographs Sisters III, from the “Miscegenated Family Album” series, subtly mourns and reconciles the estranged relationship that preceded the untimely death of the artist’s sister Devonia. During her first visit to Egypt shortly after the passing of her sister, O’Grady gained a renewed sense of kinship and shared history from being surrounded for the first time in her life by people who looked like her. Building on the physical resemblances she saw between Devonia and the Egyptian queen Nefertiti, O’Grady produced a series of sixteen diptychs that juxtapose images of Devonia and Nerfertiti, along with photographs of their respective families, to create a narrative addressing the universal complexities of familial relations and personal memories.
